Did you know Ubad means ‘medicine’ in Balinese? It’s where the town of Ubud got its name from – and the Uma by COMO, located in Ubud’s foothills, turned out to be just what the doctor ordered. My four day stay here quickly sent me into a very welcome state of peace, calm and happiness.
I stayed in the Uma Pool Villa/Suite, which features a private plunge pool with views of the Balinese jungle and Tjampuhan Valley. As well as this luxury, the highlights of the suite for me were the shower, which is partly outdoor, the sunken bathtub, a four-poster bed so comfortable I could have slept in it for days and the tranquil backyard.
The suite is accessed via a good workout up and down the many stairs.
Activities include complimentary daily yoga and walking tours through local rice paddies. Should you prefer something more adventurous, the hotel can customise biking, hiking and walking tours at an additional cost.
Besides the standard menu (which is mouthwatering), you can choose a healthy alternative via the Shambhala Cuisine menu. It features lighter, nutritionally rich food and is available throughout COMO resorts worldwide. For breakfast I kept coming back to the nut and seed flatbread with cashew nut hummus, avocado, tomato and rocket – scrumptious and guilt-free! I also dined at Uma Cucina, the Italian-inspired restaurant on site. The grilled jumbo octopus was my favourite (served with a tomato, olive and basil salad, chickpea sauce and chargrilled bread).
I have had the luxury of staying at two different COMO hotels and the fantastic customer service at both is a credit to Christina Ong (Singaporean businesswoman and head of COMO Group) and her vision. It is potentially the best I have experienced in all my travels.
COMO’s approach is best explained on their website: “We embrace lifelong learning and development, our company never wanting to be everything to everybody, but instead offering only the very best to an exacting few.”
Last but not least, the COMO Shambhala Retreat is not to be missed. For guaranteed bliss, I highly recommend the COMO Shambhala massage using the resort’s signature blended oils. The blend is that good, I bought the INVIGORATE Balm to keep the smell with me forever.
Inspired by my time at the Retreat and my sublime COMO experience, it is my dream to visit the COMO Shambhala Estate in Bali.
COMO Shambhala have a view “That health and wellbeing are vital components of true luxury.”
I believe there will be nothing else in the world quite like it.
